Offensive Toilet Odor

Despite regularly scheduled cleaning toilets can give off an offensive odor that does not respond to this cleaning.

One cause could be a burst sewage pipe below the toilet.  In this event no amount of toilet bowl cleansing will remove the odor as it is not the cause.

Another possible cause is a crack or leak at the base of the toilet.  This may manifest itself over time if the toilet has been installed poorly or improperly.  Leaking around the base of the toilet is the tip off of this problem.

Finally, a defective wax ring, which is a seal between the toilet and the waste pipe that it sits on, could be the culprit.

If routine, regular toilet bowl cleaning does not eliminate odors then we suggest you call a licensed plumber to investigate the other possible causes discussed.
