Garbage Disposal

Garbage Disposals last approximately 10 years, at which point their cutting effectiveness declines.  When you add a busy Holiday kitchen on top of that, complete with lots of greasy food, the result is a clogged kitchen sink.

There are couple of up front things you can do to avoid this perfect storm.  The first, of course, is to install a new garbage disposal in advance.  This would be easy if we all knew what was coming, but such is not often the case.

The second approach is to put all food scraps into a plastic garbage bag which takes the garbage disposal out of play. After the Holiday meal simply put ALL the scraps into a plastic bag including all the greasy turkey and gravy.  After the cooking pans cool down, make sure all of that congealed grease goes into the plastic bag as well.

Now if you do use the garbage disposal and it jams, there is an Allen wrench you should be able to locate under the sink.  This should have come with the unit and simply follow the directions you will find printed on a sticker on the side of the garbage disposal, and see if this will undo the jam.

Also get a flashlight and look into the disposal and see if there is a bone or other object causing the jam.  If you do see something, make sure to wear gloves when you try and remove it.
