Blocked Bathtub Drain

A blocked or slow bath tub drain is a maddening problem in any household. It makes a shower a swamp type experience and it’s difficult to effectively clean a bathtub when it will not drain properly.
The issue is almost always caused by an accumulation of hair, bath products or both.
There are a couple of good home remedies available to fix this issue.  The first thing to try is straightening out a coat hanger, inserting it down the bathtub drain and seeing if you can dig out the clog. This will often work, that is, unless the clog has moved down far enough in the drain pipe and cannot be reached this way.

If the coat hanger fails you can try a chemical solution.  There are many chemical uncloggers on the market; some of them are very toxic while others are more friendly and safer for pipes.

One home solution is a combination of baking soda and vinegar.  Pour half a cup of baking soda and then a half cup of white vinegar into the drain. Cover up the drain and leave it alone for 10 minutes.  While you are waiting boil a pot of hot water and then pour it down the drain.  This combination may well break up the blockage in the drain pipe.

If these solutions fail, then it is time to call in a plumber.  They will come in armed with drain snakes, and the like, and should be able to quickly unclog the drain pipe.
